Obviously, theories of all kinds are useful. But, once we have decideddepending on the theory chosenthat a certain individual suffers from an incomplete or unstable personality, for instance that the ego-Self axis has been insufficiently developed (Erich Neumann) or that the family background was not able to provide a stable enough self (Hans Kohut),2 how do we enter into the case? How do we work with the client? My intention is not to review possible approaches. But, to my mind, there is a gap between theory and practice.

At that level, the negative pole of the Self does not correspond exactly to the negative pole of the ego (the negative aspect of the personal or collective shadow strictu senso). In everyday practice, this archetypal shadow may manifest in series of negative synchronicities, in concrete diseases, in blockages, but also quite often simply in deep depression and a feeling of absolute hopelessness. The analysand becomes stuck in darkness and, through the transference-countertransference, the analyst too may suffer despair.

The majority of people who go into analysis suffer from a neurosis. We tend to try to help on the basis of a hypothesis according to which their specific biography must be "treated," rewritten, reexperienced, in order both to eliminate those elements that are causing difficulties and to make their life richer. But there may be too much of a tendency to explain everything, to treat every symptom, to correct any deviance. Developmental theories in particular provide therapists with a comforting framework.
