The traditional commercial data processing (DP) operation is a batch process, with tapes placed inside secure boxes being left outside shop doors to be picked up by processing specialists after hours. The trend now, however, is to make such computing in real-time, so that each transaction is noted by the computer and processed at once. This allows stocks to be kept at lower levels, since trends can be picked up earlier and ordering done a day before it could be done with batch methods. Tighter management control is also possible when the computing is carried out in real-time.

The speed and capacity of the large mainframe, particularly the more advanced designs, are the features that keep up a demand for this type of machine. Batch processing does not require great computing speed, because the speed at which data can be processed is always greater than the speed at which it can be read into the machine or printed out. For real-time use, however, very high computing speed is essential. There is little point in taking ten minutes to plot and predict the course of a missile if the missile can reach you in four minutes, and if the time needed to analyse a factory process is too long, then the corrections that are applied will be too late and will probably over-compensate.
