By 1929 the Cardington Airship Station was set to become the centre for international airship operations with its hub in the UK. An essential part of this strategy was the 62-metre steel-framed open mooring mast. Measuring 21 metres in diameter at its base and the first cantilevered tower of its type, it enabled the ‘lighter than air’ airships to swing freely around the mast and face into the wind.

The history of Samuely’s contacts with Modern Movement architects furnished Hunt with introductions to the Architectural Association in London and with an emerging group of graduate architects. 1978 Hunt visited the Eames House case study house number 8); designer and philosopher Richard Buckminster Fuller (whom Hunt met on many occasions); architect and industrial designer Fritz Haller (Hunt eventually met Fritz Haller in Gratz in 2001); and building and industrial designer and fabricator Jean Prouvé (whom Hunt met on occasions when Prouvé visited Foster’s and Rogers’s London offices).

The building was restricted to one fifth of the size of Highpoint I, and the development ended up as 12 luxury maisonettes instead of the 57 workers’ houses as Lubetkin and Gestetner originally intended. The design took the form of rectilinear blocks extending from one leg of the cruciform blocks of Highpoint I. It comprised two conjoined eight-storey elements again with a shared lobby entrance and a roof terrace. The end elevations of the extensions contained two maisonettes per floor which continue the facade design of Highpoint I.
