14 In point of fact, MacIntyre hints at what he is about to do, namely, to fuse the figure of Kierkegaard with that of the conservative and orotund Judge Wilhelm (or ‘B’). Here are the fingerprints; while Kierkegaard is nowhere and everywhere in Either/Or. “perhaps we detect his presence most of all in the belief that he puts into the mouth of ‘B’…”15 There can be no doubt about it, so far as MacIntyre is concerned, Kierkegaard’s moral theory is the latent content behind the Judge’s manifest moralizing.
Thoughts, are finite approximationobjects. The apparent contradiction that is madness stems from the disproportion between a virtually infinite passion and its finite approximation-object. The inwardness of the infinite is an infinite interest in one’s existence. All too easily confused with vanity, this self-concern finds its natural and true voice in a boundless yearning for infinitude. More to the less abstract point, the individual who loves himself as he ought to love his neighbor longs for his God.
